Casting announced for open-air staging of Mamma Mia!

Sara Poyzer will re-create her performance as Donna Sheridan in a special outdoor staging of multi-award-winning feel-good musical Mamma Mia! in August.

Audiences will be able to enjoy the original stage show in the open air for the first time for a limited season of 20 performances in the grounds of Harewood House in the heart of Yorkshire from 13- 30 August 2021.

Poyzer will return to the role she has played at London’s Novello Theatre and on tour both in the UK and internationally alongside Lucy May Barker who returns to the role of Sophie Sheridan after playing the character in the West End and on tour in the UK and overseas.

Touring cast members also featuring in the special shows include Nicky Swift (Rosie), Helen Anker (Tanya), Richard Standing (Sam Carmichael), Daniel Crowder (Harry Bright), Sarah Harlington (alternate Donna Sheridan), Mariella Mazzilli (Lisa) and James Willoughby Moore (Pepper). The cast also includes Phil Corbitt (Bill Austin), Toby Miles (Sky), Jasmine Shen(Ali) and Corey Mitchell (Eddie).

Unveiling details of the special presentation, associate producer Nick Grace said: “We’ve created Mamma Mia! Under The Stars with audience safety in mind and the event has been designed to operate under social distancing rules.

“We will have a number of Covid secure measures implemented, including strictly controlled capacity and ensuring lots of space for our audience to circulate both in front of the stage and around our food and drinks areas.

“Safety will remain our priority and we are constantly monitoring government guidelines to ensure the show can go ahead, even without an easing of current restrictions.

“If social distancing is no longer required, we’ll aim to ease our restrictions, but will ensure that there will still be the space to remain socially distant for anyone who wants to. This is the joy of being outdoors. We want audiences to stay safe, feel confident and most importantly, have fun!”

Part of the Mamma Mia! UK and international tour celebrating 22 years since the show’s debut in London, the Harewood House shows will offer the only chance to see the hit show in 2021 outside of the capital.

Since its premiere in London’s West End over 22 years ago, producer Judy Craymer’s inventive musical, inspired by the hits of Swedish supergroup ABBA, has been seen live by over 65 million people in 50 different productions in 16 different languages. In 2011 the show became the first Western musical to be staged in Mandarin in China.

The show originally opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999, before moving into the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004 and then reopening in its current London home, the Novello Theatre in 2012. The London production has broken box office records in all three of its London homes.

With music and lyrics by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.

The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material and arrangements by Martin Koch.

The Mamma Mia! UK and international tour is produced by Judy Craymer, Richard East and Björn Ulvaeus for Littlestar in association with Universal and NGN.
