LIZA PULMAN SINGS STREISAND EP (Downloads)

Liza Pulman, known to most as one third of the satirical trio Fascinating Aida, has released an EP of songs by Barbra Streisand for Barbra’s 79th birthday.
Now, I expect that coda to the name of the EP is simply a marketing ploy. 79th birthday? Is that special? 8oth maybe! Anyway, having got that out of the way, this is basically a sampling of Pulman’s one-woman show in which she sings songs made famous by Streisand. So, taking it on face value rather than a birthday celebration, it is a very agreeable album. It brings different arrangements to classics ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’, ‘New York State of Mind’, ‘The Way He Makes Me Feel’, ‘The Way We Were’, ‘Evergreen’ and ‘A Sleepin’ Bee’.
‘A Sleepin’ Bee’ is the only live track on the album and has the backing of Andy Taylor-Vebel on guitar and Tom Mark on bass – this gives you a good taste of what the evening’s entertainment is like. Pulman doesn’t fall into the trap of doing an impersonation of Streisand (that would be a really silly move) but you can hear the influence that the diva has had on her voice and renditions.
On the tracks ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’ and ‘The Way We Were’ she is accompanied by the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band and, as strange as that sounds, it works thanks to the arrangements by Joseph Atkins.
