CD Review: Lucie Jones Live At The Adelphi

LUCIE JONES LIVE AT THE ADELPHI (Live Here Now – plus downloadable)

Star rating: five stars ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

During her six-week break from starring in Waitress in the West End, Lucie Jones had come up with the idea of doing a little one-hour cabaret at Zédel venue The Crazy Coqs. Well, that soon snowballed into an evening at a packed Adelphi Theatre accompanied by the London Musical Theatre Orchestra – and what an evening it turned out to be if this recording is anything to go by.

Started where she means to end Jones tears the roof off the theatre with her rendition of ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’ and doesn’t give up until the final applause has died down at the end of the evening. It is a tour de force and proves that she is a huge talent that is going to be with us for many years to come. No matter whether it is a heart-wrenching number, a humorous track or a belter, Jones delivers.

Tracks* included are: Excerpt from ‘What’s Inside’, ‘Don’t Rain On My Parade’, ‘Sing Happy’, ‘Summer in Ohio’, ‘Gimme Gimme’, ‘The Prayer’, ‘A Piece of Sky’, ‘Into the Unknown’, ‘God Help the Outcasts’, ‘Take Me or Leave Me’, ‘Moon River’, ‘Never Give Up On You’, ‘She Used to Be Mine’, ‘That’s Life’ and ‘Bring Him Home’ (*This is the listing from the single CD – there is apparently a double CD available as well with lots of extra material).

The Welsh tenor John Owen-Jones joins here for ‘The Prayer’ and her co-star in Waitress, Marisha Wallace, joins her for ‘Take Me or Leave Me’.

I could take each track and tell you how wonderful it is and why – but to be honest I would only be repeating myself. The album simply goes to prove that, when we eventually get back to some normality in this world, musical theatre is in good hands and that we have an artist of the greatest magnitude in Lucie Jones.
