Playwright Christopher Bond’s new country-tinged musical Romford Rose will debut at Hornchurch’s Queen’s Theatre at the end of this month.
The show from the writer whose 1970s play Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is widely acknowledged as the inspiration for Stephen Sondheim’s hit musical, will play the Queen’s from 27 May until 18 June.
Bond will also take on directing duties for the show which features original country music by Jo Collins and a live band performing on a range of genre-linked instruments including the mandolin, the banjo and the pedal steel guitar.
The Romford Rose stars Sarah Day (The Girls) in the title role with Queen’s regular Wade Lewin (Hot Stuff) as her leading man. The cast also includes Nicky Croydon (TV’s Brush Strokes) and another of the venue’s regular players Sam Pay (Aladdin).
Collins, whose songs have been recorded by Cliff Richard and Elaine Paige, will serve as the show’s musical director and as a member of the Romford Rose band. The line-up also includes world-renowned pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole; former member of 1970s rock band Starry Eyed and Laughing, Iain Whitmore; alongside accomplished musicians Jennifer Douglas, Liz Kitchen, and Howard James Martin.
The creative team also includes designer Ellen Cairns, lighting designer Douglas Kuhrt, sound designer Andy Smart and choreographer and assistant director Rachel Yates.
