CLD The Real Lewis Carroll returns to Oxford

Photo 'They're just a pack of cards'Oxford Music Theatre’s CLD The Real Lewis Carroll is to return a year after it proved a hit with audiences celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice in Wonderland.

Set in Oxford between 1855 and 1865, the show delves into the story of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, the shy cleric who as Lewis Carroll created works of fiction that enchanted the world.

Writer Jane Bramwell’s musical will play Oxford’s St Columba’s United Reformed Church from 14 July until 6 August.

Describing her work, Bramwell said: “I have been an Alice in Wonderland fan since I was first given the book at the age of eight. When I read more about Carroll, the person who actually interested me was Charles Dodgson.

“Here, I have tried to write something funny and dramatic which will take the audience back to Carroll again, and prompt them to examine the questions about the real man which so intrigue me.”

With book and lyrics by Bramwell, featuring characters and text by Carroll and music by Michael Brand, the show is directed by David Kettle with Greg Arrowsmith as musical director.

The cast includes Stewart Briggs as Dodgson and Emily Louise Tomlins as the married woman he fell in love with, Lorina Liddell. Peter Watts plays Lewis Carroll and Allan Scott Douglas plays Lorina’s husband Henry.

The ensemble features Carolina Gregory, Vikki Lyons, Josh Capper, Carlo Pavan and Jamie Sheasby.
