Olivier Award-winner Clive Rowe is the latest high-profile addition to the cast of Sister Act which is due to begin touring in April 2020.
The actor who won the Best Supporting Actor Olivier for his performance in Guys and Dolls will play Eddie Souther alongside Whoopi Goldberg who will be back in the habit in London in July when she takes to the stage as Deloris Van Carter alongside Jennifer Saunders, making her musical theatre debut as Mother Superior.
Rowe will appear in the eagerly-anticipated newly-revised version of the hit show when it plays Leicester, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield and Manchester before arriving in London.
Multi award-winning US star Goldberg is due to play the irrepressible character she created on screen in two hit movies for the first time on stage at London’s Eventim Apollo from 29 July until 30 August. British comedy favourite Saunders will take charge as Mother Superior, a role Goldberg briefly played on stage at the London Palladium in 2010.
As previously announced former X Factor finalist turned musical theatre favourite Brenda Edwards (We Will Rock You, Dominion Theatre and UK tour, Chicago, West End and 10th anniversary gala) will play Deloris when the production launches at Curve Leicester on 21 April where it will play until 2 May. Edwards will continue in the role when the production visits Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Dublin, Cardiff, Ipswich, Stoke, Darlington, Liverpool, Nottingham and Milton Keynes. Edwards will also appear as Deloris for selected performances in London.
Casting for the role of Mother Superior for performances outside of London will be announced at a later date along with details of the full company.
The production is directed by Bill Buckhurst with choreography by Alistair David, set design by Morgan Large, lighting design by Tim Mitchell, sound design by Tom Marshall and musical supervision by Stephen Brooker. Casting is by Stuart Burt.
Based on the hit 1990s film featuring Goldberg, Maggie Smith and Harvey Keitel, Sister Act features original music by multi award-winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater. The book is by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner with additional book material by Douglas Carter Beane.
After premiering in California in 2006, the musical opened at the London Palladium in 2009 with American newcomer Patina Miller starring as Deloris alongside veteran British actors Sheila Hancock and Ian Lavender. During the show’s West End run, Goldberg briefly joined the cast to play Mother Superior before a family emergency forced her to leave the show. Former Emmerdale star Sally Dexter stepped in until Goldberg returned for five performances towards the end of the run.
