A new version of the award-winning musical Daddy Long Legs is among the line-up of five in-house productions in The Barn Theatre’s 2019 season.
Following on from the 200-seat Cirencester venue’s award-winning first year in operation, Daddy Long Legs will be the theatre’s first musical in 2019.
Running from 2 October until 2 November, the new production of the award-winning Off-Broadway musical, first seen in the West End in 2012, will be directed by Kirstie Davies.
Based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Jean Webster, Daddy Long Legs – the Musical has a book by John Caird and music and lyrics by Paul Gordon. A 1955 film version loosely based on the original novel famously starred Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron.
The final production of 2019 will be a new interpretation of Dickens’ timeless tale of Scrooge and his ghostly visitors adapted by Alan Pollock and set to an original score.
The Barn’s artistic director Iwan Lewis will direct the production which will run from 27 November 2019 until 4 January 2020.
Announcing details of the line-up for the second year at 200-seat venue Lewis said: “We have been absolutely thrilled by the audience response to our inaugural year and our Built By Barn productions. We did not expect to have had such positive industry recognition so soon after opening our doors to the public.
“It was humbling to have been nominated as Best Director at the Stage Debut Awards but winning The Stage Award for Best Fringe Theatre is truly unbelievable and has made all the hard work worthwhile. This is still the start of our journey and we are determined to use these achievements to catapult us into our 2019 season.
“Our mission to produce challenging and inspiring professional theatre of the highest standards has been clear from the start and our 2019 programme will again reflect that commitment and provide a theatre that sits at the heart of our community sharing all the thrills and gifts that live entertainment can bring. Our new ticketing strategy mirrors this desire for inclusion and with prices starting from as little as £8 per ticket, The Barn really is a Theatre For All.”
The ambitious project to create a major producing house at the heart of the development of Cirencester’s Grade II listed Ingleside House has attracted support from leading Broadway director Jerry Mitchell and actors James Dreyfus, Matthew Kelly, Heida Reed and Daisy May Cooper.
Funded by local businessman and resident Ian Carling and his wife Chrissie, the Barn Theatre has benefited from over £4.5 million private investment in the acquisition and development of the site.
Working with former musical theatre performer Iwan Lewis who came on board as the venue’s artistic director in 2015, the couple’s vision is to create an accessible unsubsidised professional theatre. The Barn Theatre Project is a registered charity.
