Emmy Award-winning writer Danny Strong has been commissioned to write the book for the new musical about the life and times of Frank Sinatra.
A partnership between the Ambassador Theatre Group, prolific film and television producer Stewart Till, Frank Sinatra Enterprises (a joint venture between the Sinatra family and Warner Music Group) and Broadway producer Edward Walson, the project was originally announced in 2016 with a proposed 2018 launch.
Although no writer was attached to the project at the time, the producers revealed the show would use Ol’ Blue Eyes’ extensive catalogue of more than 1,400 tracks from decades of recordings to provide the musical accompaniment to the story of the New Jersey-born son of Italian immigrants who became one of the biggest stars in the world.
With actor, producer and writer Strong (Empire, Game Change) now on board the show is expected to make its debut in 2020.
Commenting on his involvement in the production, Strong who has also been signed by Disney to write the script for their re-worked movie version of the musical Oliver!, said: “It is an honour to get to write a musical about one of the biggest icons of the 20th century. Sinatra is one of the great talents of all time and his fascinating and powerful story will make for a terrific stage musical. I’m deeply honoured to get this opportunity.”
Speaking on behalf of Ambassador Theatre Group, Adam Speers said: “To have Danny on board is amazing news. His previous work speaks for itself and it made perfect sense to have him write the book for what is set to be a unique musical about an all-time Hollywood legend and icon.”
Till added: “Danny Strong’s writing is always incredibly entertaining, smart and a huge magnet for audiences. That is why he was our absolute first choice.”
Sinatra The Musical will be executive produced by Larry Manetti.
