A fictional meeting between two of Hollywood’s most distinctive and outspoken stars – Barbra Streisand and Joan Rivers – is the subject of Roy Smiles’ new comedy The Funny Girls.

Directed by Michael Strassen, the latest from the writer of Kurt and Sid which detailed a fictional meeting between Kurt Cobain and Sid Vicious, The Funny Girls will premiere from 17 to 24 September 2021, as part of the Studio at New Wimbledon Theatre’s season of new writing. The production will then play London’s Upstairs at the Gatehouse from 26 October to 21 November 2021.

Mia Tomlinson (The Beast Must Die, Britbox; The Lost Pirate Kingdom, Netflix) will star as Joan Rivers with Rosanna Harris (Grease, UK tour) taking on the role of Barbra Streisand in an imaginary reunion inspired by the two stars 1950s pre-fame appearance in the cast of Off-Broadway play Driftwood.

Commenting on the production, producer Thomas Hopkins said: “ Having produced Kurt and Sid with Danny Dyer and Shaun Evans in 2009 at Trafalgar Studios, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to share Roy Smiles’ new comedy. The team and I couldn’t be more excited to showcase the phenomenal talents of Mia Tomlinson and Rosanna Harris in this hilarious new production.”

With set and costume design by Jean Gray, lighting design by Andrew Exeter and sound design by Dan Sampson, The Funny Girls is produced by Hopkins, Debbie Chazen and Guy Chapman. The show will also tour later in the year.
