Eighties-inspired Club Tropicana star cast announced

Former Sugarbabe Amelle Berrabah will make her musical theatre debut alongside multiple TV talent show winner turned stage favourite Joe McElderry, former EastEnder Neil McDermott, comedian Kate Robbins and Wicked star Emily Tierney in Club Tropicana The Musical.

Inspired by the distinctive sounds and colourful fashions of the 1980s, the musical comedy which has been written by Michael Gyngell (co-writer of the popular stage adaptation of the pop classic Summer Holiday) will receive its world premiere in January ahead of a UK tour.

Featuring some of the 1980s’ biggest pop hits, the show will feature a cast headed by McElderry (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), McDermott (Eugenius!), Robbins (TV’s Dinner Ladies, Spitting Image) and Tierney (Eugenius!).

The cast is completed by Karina Hind, Calvin Hudson, Cellen Chugg Jones, Megan Louch, Rebecca Mendoza, Alexandra O’Reilly, Joshua Pearson, Rory Phelan, Nye Rees, Camilla Rowland, Christina Shand, Courtney-Brogan Smalley, Tara Verloop and Kane Verrall.

Announcing the show earlier this year, producer Mark Goucher said: “What a time the 80s was: great dancing, great bands, great music, funny clothes… but mostly really bad hair! But I look back with such happiness remembering going to gigs for the first time. Club Tropicana The Musical is a celebration of the 80s with a lorra lorra laughs!”

Taking its title from Wham’s bubble-gum pop classic, the show focuses on a would-be bride and groom who get cold feet ahead of their big day and jet off separately unaware they are heading for the same hotel, the Club Tropicana.

The production will be directed by Samuel Holmes and the show’s choreographer Nick Winston, with set and costume design by Diego Pitarch, lighting design by Tim Deiling, sound design by Ben Harrison, and musical supervision and arrangements by Greg Arrowsmith.

Produced by Mark Goucher Productions and Gavin Kalin Productions, casting will be announced at a later date.

After an opening run at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley (24 January-2 February 2019) the tour will visit: Bradford Alhambra; His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen; Norwich Theatre Royal; Sheffield Lyceum Theatre; Plymouth Theatre Royal; Grand Opera House, York; Theatre Royal, Brighton; New Victoria Theatre, Woking; Cheltenham Everyman Theatre; Hull New Theatre; Wimbledon New Theatre; Wolverhampton Grand Theatre; Coventry Belgrade Theatre; Oxford New Theatre; Sunderland Empire Theatre; Swansea Grand Theatre; Manchester Opera House; Edinburgh Playhouse; Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury; Liverpool Empire; and Nottingham Theatre Royal.
