Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella will take her final bow on Broadway on 4 June 2023 barely four months after the show’s New York debut.
Based on an original idea by Killing Eve screenwriter and actress Emerald Fennell the feminist retelling of the classic fairy tale featuring a new score by Lloyd Webber and lyrics by multi-award-winning writer David Zippel (City of Angels, The Goodbye Girl) opened on Broadway following its Covid-hit premiere run in the West End.
Arriving at the Imperial Theatre in New York with a new name, revised content and a new leading lady (Linedy Genao) just a day before Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of The Opera took its final Broadway bow after 35 years, the show had been tipped to continue Lloyd Webber’s celebrated 43-year Broadway run of hit shows.
Bad reviews, low ticket sales and a failure to make the Tony Awards shortlist have reportedly led to the closure of the show.
Following the announcement, the musical’s director Laurence Connor tweeted: “So sad that @badcinderella is closing. Many thanks to the incredible cast, crew and fellow creatives, who have worked tirelessly and with good grace throughout. Also, a heartfelt thanks to the show’s supporters who have been amazing.”
Bad Cinderella joins a list of recent Broadway closures including The Phantom of the Opera, Beetlejuice, Almost Famous, KPOP, A Strange Loop, Ain’t No Mo and Bob Fosse’s Dancin’.
