The award-winning UK premiere production of the multi-award-winning Off-Broadway hit Adding Machine: A Musical is now available free-to-view on the Finborough Theatre YouTube channel.

Directed by the winner of the 2016 Off West End Theatre Award for Best Director, Josh Seymour, the critically-acclaimed production will be available (without subtitles) until 12 November 2020. A subtitled version is also available on Scenesaver.

Based on Elmer Rice’s 1923 play Adding Machine, the musical adaptation was composed by Joshua Schmidt with the libretto by Jason Loewith and Schmidt. The darkly comic story of Mr Zero, an ordinary man who murders his boss after he finds himself replaced by a machine, the show was first staged in Illinois in 2007, a year before its Off-Broadway debut.

The Finborough production stars: Joseph Alessi (The Play What I Wrote UK tour) in the central role of Mr Zero alongside Kate Milner-Evans (The Phantom of the Opera, Her Majesty’s Theatre) as Mrs Zero. The cast also includes Joanna Kirkland (Parade, Donmar Warehouse), Edd Campbell Bird (Les Misérables, Queen’s Theatre), James Dinsmore (Corbyn The Musical, Waterloo East Theatre), Helen Walsh (Les Misérables international tour), George Rae (Grand Hotel, Southwark Playhouse) and Sue Appleby (South Pacific UK tour).

Seymour headed a creative team that included set and costume designer Frankie Bradshaw, lighting designer Neill Brinkworth, sound designer Philip Matejtschuk, musical director Ben Ferguson, movement director by Chi-San Howard and casting was by Leon Kay.

Presented by Alex Turner Productions in association with SDWC Productions, Adding Machine: A Musical is part of the Finborough Theatre’s #FinboroughFor Free initiative which involves the release of a new production every month while the South London venue remains closed.

Although the productions are available free of charge viewers are asked to help support the future by donating to Finborough’s #SaveOurTheatres Crowdfunder appeal which was recently launched as part of the Theatres Trust’s national fundraising appeal. The Finborough Theatre’s campaign is running until 8 November with every penny raised going to support the future of the theatre.

The Finborough Theatre should have been celebrating its 40th in 2020 but all productions at the small venue have been cancelled due to Covid. With no public money, the registered charity is completely dependant on the generosity of its audiences.
