Florence Odumosu (Into The Woods, Cockpit Theatre, A Christmas Carol, Pitlochry Festival Theatre) will step into the role of Nina Simone when Apphia Campbell’s award-winning Black is the Color of My Voice heads back to UK theatres in early 2022.
Presented by Seabright Productions, the extensive national tour follows sold-out seasons in Shanghai, New York, Edinburgh and London.
Written and directed by Campbell, the solo show which takes its inspiration from the life of the American jazz singer and civil rights activist with the distinctive voice will open at the Horsecross Theatre in Perth on 3 and 4 February 2022. The show will then visit Epsom, Leamington Spa, Winchester, Oxford, Liverpool, Torrington, Bristol, Cheltenham, Cardiff, Derby, Southampton, Hereford, Exeter, Harpenden, Diss, Chipping Norton, Henley, Halifax, Wigan, South Shields, Scarborough, Huddersfield, Lancaster, Gillingham, Plymouth and Norwich.
Florida-born Campbell’s Black is the Color of My Voice debuted in Shanghai in 2013 before arriving at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014. A UK tour followed with sold out dates at London’s St James Theatre and Wilton’s Music Hall and at the Oxford Playhouse. In 2019 Campbell made her West End debut in the show at the Trafalgar Studios and also celebrated the London premiere of her show Woke at the Battersea Arts Centre.
Woke was initially presented as part of the Made In Scotland Showcase in 2017. The show which won a Scotsman Fringe First Award returned for a sell-out second Edinburgh Festival Fringe season and UK tour in 2018.
