Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has confirmed the full cast and creatives for the upcoming production of the multi-award-winning Broadway musical Once On This Island.
As previously announced Gabrielle Brooks (Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical, Lyric Theatre) will play the central role of Ti Moune alongside Stephenson Arden-Sodje (The Lion King, UK and Ireland tour) as Daniel in the production which will run from 10 May until 10 June 2023.
They will be joined by Courtney-Mae Briggs (Andrea), Jonathon Grant (Armand + US Agwe), Emilie Louise Israel (Erzulie), Chris Jarman (Tonton), Anelisa Lamola (Asaka), Natasha Magigi (Mama Euralie), Ashley Samuels (Agwe) and Lejaun Sheppard (Papa Ge). Further cast includes Bernadette Bangura, Hanna Dimtsu, Nay-Nay, Cassandra Lee, Cherece Richards, Mikel Sylvanus and Marco Titus. The role of Young Ti Moune is shared by Janai Bartlett, Lexi Kowlessar, Nesisa Mhindu, Kirsten Muzvuru, Nielle Springer and Olivia St Louis.
Based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, Once On This Island features a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty (Anastasia, Ragtime). The original 1995 West End production won Best New Musical at the Olivier Awards while the most recent Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival in 2018.
Director Ola Ince heads a creative team that also includes musical director Chris Poon, musical supervisor Phil Bateman, designer Georgia Lowe, choreographer Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy, sound designer Nick Lidster, lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun, associate choreographer Niquelle LaTouche, associate director Lindsay McAllister, associate sound designer Niamh Gaffney, fight director Philip d’Orléans, costume designer Melissa Simon-Hartman and casting director Jacob Sparrow. The team is completed by Annemette Verspeak (voice and text director) and Ingrid Mackinnon (season associate – intimacy support)
Commenting on the production earlier this year, director Ince said: “Once On This Island is a poignant, moving and politically charged story. I’m thrilled to be working with an extraordinary talented team at Regent Park’s Open Air Theatre; a place where true magic happens. It’s a dream come true!”
