Jonathan O’Boyle’s award-winning actor-musician production of The Last Five Years will return to London for a limited season at the Garrick Theatre this autumn.
Previously performed to sold-out houses at the Southwark Playhouse, the production will move into the larger Garrick Theatre from 17 September 2021 ahead of an opening night on 23 September. The season is scheduled to end on 17 October.
Starring Molly Lynch (Wasted, Southwark Playhouse) and Oli Higginson (Napoleon Blown Apart, Arcola Theatre), O’Boyle’s innovative production has the actors on stage at all times, playing the piano and accompanied by a four-piece band.
O’Boyle heads a creative team that includes choreographer Sam Spencer-Lane, set and costume designer Lee Newby, lighting designer Jamie Platt, sound designer Adam Fisher and musical director Leo Munby. Casting is by Jane Deitch. The general manager and assistant producer is Chris Matanlé for Aria Entertainment.
The Last Five Years is produced at the Garrick Theatre by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment, Eilene Davidson Productions, Edward Prophet, People Entertainment Group with Dan Looney, Adam Paulden and Jason-Haigh Ellery for DLAP Group, David Treatman and Max Johnson.
The original Southwark Playhouse production which was produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment, Edward Prophet and People Entertainment Group had been playing to packed houses at the Southwark Playhouse when the curtain came down on the production due to the Covid closedown in March 2020. Home audiences across the world were also given the opportunity to see a specially recorded film of the sold-out Southwark Playhouse production in November last year.
Written and composed by triple Tony Award-winner Brown (Parade, The Bridges of Madison County), The Last Five Years premiered in Chicago in 2001 and debuted Off-Broadway in 2002. The musical which was made into a film featuring the star of the Pitch Perfect movies, Anna Kendrick, premiered in London at the St. James Theatre in 2016 with a production directed by Brown and starring Samantha Barks (Les Misérables) and Olivier Award winner Jonathan Bailey (Company).
