God Catcher is a new musical from Cassie Muise and Tyler McKinnon that reimagines the story of Arachne, the weaver of Greek mythology and brings to life a variety of Greek Gods and their stories.
Arachne learns her weaving skills from her mother, but as her skill develops so does her challenge to Athena, the goddess of war. She wins the ultimate challenge, but then faces the wrath of Athena, culminating in a life-changing climax.
This is ultimately a charming new work – its storytelling links Greek mythology with more current, thought-provoking themes – how important is it to tell the truth at all times? – can we acknowledge the truth of the stories of ‘Forgotten Women?’
For me, the storytelling didn’t always work, especially at the beginning of the show, but there is a lively score, some great songs, and complex harmonies delivered well.
The star of the show is Arachne herself – Yna Tresvalles delivers a very strong, engaging performance throughout, and helps pull together the stories of the other Gods we meet – mainly Hermes and Athena, competently played by Isabella Gervais and Colum Findlay.
Overall I’d have liked a bit more oomph – at times it all felt a bit slow, but it’s definitely worth a watch.
