Smash hit musical Hamilton predictably leads the field with a record-breaking 13 nominations for this year’s Olivier Awards, overtaking previous joint record holders: last year’s The Cursed Child and 2008’s Hairspray with 11 nominations.
Announced today by Elaine Paige and Alexandra Burke, the nominees for the 2018 Olivier Awards with Mastercard recognised a number of major musical theatre productions including the National Theatre’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies which received 10 nominations. The list also features five nominations for both the Old Vic’s production of Conor McPherson’s Girl From The North Country and Sheffield Theatres’ new British musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
Commenting on the nominations for the prestigious awards which will be presented at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 8 April, Julian Bird, chief executive of Society of London Theatre and executive producer of the Olivier Awards, said: “This year’s Olivier nominations reflect a strong and exciting performing arts scene in the UK with fresh, new work coming to the fore. It is wonderful to see so many first time nominees and we look forward to welcoming everyone to this celebratory occasion on Sunday 8 April.”
