Manchester’s award-winning Hope Mill Theatre has revealed the cast and creatives for the upcoming revival of the Broadway hit Spring Awakening later this month.
Directed by Luke Sheppard, the second of five in-house musical productions for 2018 from the successful partnership between Hope Mill and London arts producer Aria Entertainment is due to run from 29 March until 3 May 2018.
Based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial play, the multi award-winning show has a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Duncan Sheik.
Unveiling details of a cast packed with fresh faces, Sheppard said: “We made a commitment to seeking out fresh new talent to bring Spring Awakening to life for a new generation, and after auditioning over 200 artists between London and Manchester, our cast embodies the bright future of musical theatre talent in Britain. It’s a privilege to work with them on this extraordinary piece.”
The cast is made up of Darragh Cowley (making his professional debut ahead of graduating from Guildford School of Acting this year), Adam Dawson (recently in Hair at The Vaults, London), Beth Hinton-Lever (Graeae Theatre’s Reasons to be Cheerful), Teleri Hughes (professional debut following training at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama), Nikita Johal (Children of Eden, Princess Caraboo), Gillian Kirkpatrick (Sunny Afternoon, Sweeney Todd), Luke Latchman (Twelfth Night and A Christmas Carol at the RSC), Tim Mahendran (professional debut ahead of graduating Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts), Seyi Omooba (Ragtime, Little Beasts), Neil Stewart (Jersey Boys international tour, Mrs Henderson Presents), Sophia Simoes Da Silva (professional debut), Jabez Sykes (The Snow Queen, Kiss Me Quickstep) and Christian Tyler Wood (Jersey Boys international tour, Big Girls Don’t Cry).
Produced by Hope Mill Theatre founders Joseph Houston and William Whelton and co-artistic director and resident producer Katy Lipson of Aria Entertainment, and Ramin Sabi for DEM Productions, Spring Awakening features design by Gabriella Slade, with musical direction by Gareth Bretherton, choreography by Tom Jackson Greaves, lighting design by Nic Farman, sound design by Leigh Davies, and casting by Verity Naughton. The associate designer is Sarah Mercadé, and the assistant and resident director is Annabelle Hollingdale.
The production is co-produced with DEM Productions. Associate producers include Upstage Creative, Rachel Kraftman Productions and Project One.
Commenting on the latest product of the Hope Mill/Aria partnership, Lipson said: “We are delighted to be producing Spring Awakening as our seventh in-house musical at Hope Mill Theatre since opening in 2016. For this production we are proud to be working with London producer DEM Productions and welcoming an incredibly exciting award winning creative team and company to the theatre.”
The brainchild of Houston and Whelton, the 120-seat Hope Mill Theatre in the Ancoats area of Manchester opened in December 2015 and is part of a converted Grade II listed former cotton mill in the Ancoats area of Manchester that also houses studios for writers, artists and designers; events space and a café and bar.
