Award-winning New Zealand born actor Hayden Tee will step into the role of Miss Trunchbull in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s West End production of Matilda The Musical next month.
The star whose previous roles include Javert in Les Misérables on Broadway, in the West End and on tour will take to the stage as the monstrous headmistress for the first time on 11 September 2018.
He will be joined by Rob Compton (Wonder.land, Manchester Palace, Manchester International Festival and National Theatre) and Holly Dale Spencer (Annie, Piccadilly Theatre and UK tour) who will take over the roles of Mr and Mrs Wormwood.
Gina Beck will continue in the role of Miss Honey for the second year alongside new young actors Isobel Hubble and Francesca McKeown who will share the title role with Sarah Munday and Olivia Wells.
To mark the arrival of the new cast members the RSC has created a new video following the four Matildas as they run away to join Giffords Circus for the day where they are taught special skills including acrobatics, clowning and juggling.
The adult cast also includes: Alex Louize Bird, Jaye Elster, Glen Facey, Alex Hammond, Peter Houston, Jessica Joslin, Bethany Kate, Sammy Kelly, Ben Kerr, Bryan Mottram, Malinda Parris, James Revell, Gemma Scholes, Simon Shorten, Callum Train and Robert Tregoning.
The other young performers due to join the London company to make up the three teams who will play the roles of Bruce, Lavender, Amanda and the rest of the pupils at Crunchem Hall are: Lois Abercrombie, Tom Brown, Emilia Bosi, Toby Brandon, Quincy Miller-Cole, Lottie Cook, Imogen Darwen, Jimmy Fordham Reed, Clara Freeman Alves, Stella Haden, Jobe Hart, Noah Leggott, Archie Lewis, Henry Littell, Austen Phelan, Marley Quinlan-Gardner, Daisy Statham, Cherry Vaughn-White and Rochelle Wyatt.
Now in its seventh year in London’s West End, and the longest-running production at the Cambridge Theatre, Matilda The Musical is currently booking until 20 October 2019.
Written by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, Matilda The Musical is directed by Matthew Warchus. The production is designed by Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker and the special effects and illusions are by Paul Kieve.
Matilda The Musical was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, before transferring to London’s West End in October 2011, where it opened to rave reviews.
Winner of 86 major international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, the show has been seen by over seven million people worldwide. The first UK and Ireland tour of the musical version of Roald Dahl’s much-loved book launched at Leicester Curve in March this year and is currently playing the Birmingham Hippodrome until 8 September.
Running until 17 August 2019, the tour is due to play Manchester Palace Theatre, Cardiff Wales Millennium Centre, Theatre Royal Plymouth, the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, Edinburgh Playhouse, The Bristol Hippodrome, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton and Norwich Theatre Royal.
