A website dedicated to the life and work of Irving Berlin has been launched in celebration of what would have been the legendary composer’s 130th birthday.
The first dedicated digital resource for the man responsible for a large portion of the Great American Songbook has been launched by the composer’s family in conjunction with his publishers Concord Music (in North America) and Universal Music Publishing Group.
Presented by the Irving Berlin Music Company, www.irvingberlin.com features a specially commissioned detailed account of the composer’s life, including the story of his great romance with and 62-year marriage to Ellin Mackay, the billionaire’s daughter who defied her father to marry him.
Features of the site include: Behind the Songs – a section which explores the story behind some of the composer’s best-loved works and features exclusive excerpts from The Complete Lyrics of Irving Berlin (edited by Robert Kimbal and one of Berlin’s daughters, Linda Emmet); an extensive collection of star-studded photographs as well as personal family photographs; and a link to curated Spotify playlists for fans to explore his extensive catalogue and introduce a new generation to his timeless work.
Also included on the site are contact details for the licensing of Berlin’s shows and music, and details of books, albums and sheet music available to buy.
With a career that spanned over five decades, and a career that took in both stage and screen, Berlin’s contribution to popular music in general and American music in particular is immense.
