Judi Dench and Ian McKellen will join the owner of the London Evening Standard, Evgeny Lebedev to host the 2015 Theatre Awards at the Old Vic Theatre on 22 November. The event will mark both the 61st anniversary of the coveted awards and the beginning of a new partnership between the London Evening Standard and The Ivy.
As well as partnering the newspaper in presenting the awards, The Ivy will be involved in the presentation of the prestigious Editor’s Award which recognises an individual or organisation’s outstanding contribution to theatre. Previous winners have included Kevin Spacey and Michael Grandage.
Commenting on the announcements, Lebedev said: “In an iconic London venue, two giants of the acting profession – Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen – will host a lavish celebration of the world’s best theatrical talent. With the help of our generous sponsors, I am looking forward to making this the best Evening Standard Theatre Awards yet.”
The director of The Ivy, Fernando Peire, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to be partnering with this unrivalled and important awards’ ceremony to recognise the outstanding talent London has to offer, both from the stage and behind the curtain. The Ivy has always supported the theatre so it is wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate it in such a tangible way.”
This year’s awards include: Best Actor; Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress; Best Play; Evening Standard Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical; Milton Shulman Award for Best Director; Best Design; Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright; Emerging Talent Award in partnership with Burberry; as well as the Editor’s Award in partnership with The Ivy and Lebedev Award. The shortlist will be announced in early November.
