Northampton’s Royal & Derngate, The Old Vic and The Wardrobe Ensemble are uniting to bring Judith Kerr’s much-loved creation Mog to the stage.
Directed by Jesse Jones and Helena Middleton, the first-ever stage version of the stories which began with the 1970 picture book Mog The Forgetful Cat, will debut at Royal & Derngate from 3-19 June 2022 as part of the venue’s Made in Northampton 2022 season. The world premiere production will then tour the UK.
Announcing the production, Royal & Derngate’s artistic director James Dacre said: “These magical stories, from one of the country’s greatest writers for younger audiences, have delighted generations of children. We’re thrilled to be welcoming back The Wardrobe Ensemble and to be partnering with The Old Vic for the first time to reimagine them for the stage.”
The Wardrobe Ensemble’s Middleton added: “I absolutely loved the Mog books growing up. We used to have a book fair at my school and I would literally race there to make sure I was the first to get my hands on a copy. I am so delighted to be part of the team which will bring Mog to the stage and honour Judith Kerr’s gorgeous stories and illustrations.”
Featuring a mix of live music and a menagerie of creatures, the creative team for Mog The Forgetful Cat also includes composer and musical director Joey Hickman, designer Laura McEwen, sound designer Beth Duke and lighting designer Rajiv Pattani. Hickman also features in the company along with Tom England, Hanora Kamen, Kerry Lovell, Jesse Meadows, Robyn Sinclair and Ben Vardy.
Suitable for ages 3-plus, the production is based on the bestselling Mog picture book series published by HarperCollins Children’s Books.
