Artists involved in the 41 new musicals selected to be showcased at BEAM2020 at Royal & Derngate, Northampton are being invited to share content from their shows on social media between midday and 2pm tomorrow (27 March 2020).
Mercury Musical Developments and Musical Theatre Network, the organisers of the prestigious biennial industry showcase which was due to take place this week, are asking anyone with an interest in musical theatre to join them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram during the two-hour period. By following the hashtag #BEAM2020 people will be able to engage with the creatives behind the musicals chosen to feature at the leading showcase for new British musical theatre writing.
MMD and MTN will also be sharing a digital version of the BEAM2020 programme with details of all 41 new musicals and contact details for their creatives in the next few weeks. The information will be available in a Dropbox folder for those interested in further digital content on each of the shows in development.
Urging the industry to get involved and to help nurture the future of new musical theatre, MMD and MTN commented: “Of the 320 musicals pitched to us around the UK last year, each of these 41 shows moved us to tears, laughter or shivers of excitement – and we really believe they’re worthy of your further investigation.”
James Dacre, artistic director of Royal & Derngate, the venue where BEAM2020 was due to be held, said: “We can vouch for the value and quality of work found through this nationwide search: we first became aware of The Season by Jim Barne and Kit Buchan when it was showcased at BEAM2018 and less than a year later we were able to announce that it will premiere at Royal & Derngate.”
On behalf of London’s Bush Theatre, Deirdre O’Halloran added: “The enormous talent and breadth of ideas we saw at the Pitching Day at the Bush was astounding. Already there are artists and shows that have piqued our interest so we’re really excited about the quality of the work that will be presented at the BEAM2020 showcase.”
BEAM was launched in 2016 as a biennial event aimed at providing a platform for aspiring and established musical theatre professionals to reach producers, venues and anyone with the resources to develop and stage shows.
