TV and radio specials to celebrate Olivier Awards

ITV will broadcast a special Olivier Awards 2020 with Mastercard programme on 5 April 2020 at 10.15pm in place of this year’s Royal Albert Hall show which was cancelled following the Government’s advice on social distancing.

Hosted by Jason Manford, the hour-long Olivier Awards – Greatest Moments will take a look back at the last decade of the prestigious event. Featuring archive footage of performances and speeches, the show will feature some of the biggest productions of the last decade including Dreamgirls, Hamilton, The Book of Mormon, Disney’s The Lion King and the RSC’s Matilda The Musical.

The awards’ official radio partner, Magic Radio, will also broadcast a special programme earlier in the evening (from 6pm until 8pm) celebrating the best Olivier Awards moments. Magic’s new musical theatre station Magic at the Musicals will also provide a weekend of special shows.

In the lead up to 5 April, the Olivier Awards’ social channels will be trailing the ITV and Magic Radio programmes and offering a preview of the content.

The winners of this year’s awards will be revealed in a special ceremony and event later in the year with details to be confirmed as soon as the Government medical and social advice changes. The event will be broadcast on ITV and on Magic Radio.

Announcing the broadcasts Julian Bird, SOLT chief executive and Olivier Awards executive producer, said: “Amid unprecedentedly difficult times for our theatre community, we look forward to providing audiences with a unique celebration of the last ten years of incredible, world-leading British theatre honoured at the Olivier Awards in anticipation of a separate ceremony for this year’s winners in the autumn.

“We are hugely grateful to our longstanding headline sponsor Mastercard for their support this year and over the past decade – alongside all our other partners, who we look forward to working with again soon.”

To mark World Theatre Day tomorrow (Friday 27 March) the Olivier Awards will join other theatre organisations and individuals sharing favourite theatre memories on social media.
