EastEnders favourite Lucy Benjamin will star in the new jukebox-style musical Love Letters when it receives its delayed world premiere at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch from 30 July until 21 August 2021.
Returning to her local theatre for the first time since appearing in In Basildon in 2019, Benjamin will be joined by Holly Ashton (The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13¾, Menier Chocolate Factory), Kit Esuruoso (West Side Story, Royal Exchange Theatre), Dannie Harris (Christmas Carol Casebook: Away in a Danger, Lichfield Garrick Theatre), Mike Lloyd (Dreamboats and Petticoats, UK tour), Hannah Price (Buddy, UK tour), Steve Simmonds (Tommy, Ramps on the Moon, New Wolsey Theatre) and Luke Anthony Thornton (Footloose, UK tour).
Written and directed by the venue’s artistic director Douglas Rintoul and featuring the music of home-grown Essex artists from the 1960s up to present day, the musical comedy tells the story of young love in 1960s and an unposted love letter delivered years later. Music featured is by Alison Moyet, Billy Bragg, Billy Ocean, Blur, David Woodcock, Depeche Mode, Jessie J, Olly Murs, Sandie Shaw and The Tremeloes.
The creative team for the production includes designer Jess Curtis, lighting designer Mark Dymock, sound designer Chris Murray, musical director Adam Gerber and choreographer Tara Young.
Love Letters was created as part of the Theatre’s Essex On Stage programme – an ambitious two-year programme celebrating the creativity of the people of Essex led by Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch and supported by The Clothworkers’ Foundation. The musical was originally due to receive its world premiere in Hornchurch in April 2020.
