Announcing the first 2025 venues and dates last September, the musical phenomenon’s creator and producer Judy Craymer said: “It’s fabulous that Mamma Mia! will be returning to Southampton, Bristol, Oxford and Edinburgh. Mamma Mia!’s much-loved story inspired by ABBA’s irresistible hits is celebrating 25 years in the West End and continues to thrill audiences around the world. We can’t wait to again visit these great cities with the new UK tour and welcome back audiences to our Greek island idyll!”
Since its premiere in London’s West End in 1999, Craymer’s inventive musical inspired by the hits of Swedish supergroup ABBA has been seen live by over 70 million people in 50 different productions in 16 different languages. In 2011 the show became the first Western musical to be staged in Mandarin in China. The musical has also been turned into two record-breaking movies – Mamma Mia! The Movie which became the highest grossing live action musical film of all time upon its release in 2008 and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again which opened in July 2018 is the most successful live musical movie sequel of all time.
The show originally opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre in 1999, before moving into the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004 and then reopening in its current London home, the Novello Theatre in 2012. The London production has broken box office records in all three of its London homes.
With music and lyrics by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! is written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.
The production is designed by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce and Bobby Aitken, and musical supervision, additional material and arrangements by Martin Koch.
