Mark Giesser to direct Rosemary Ashe in Call Me Madam at London’s Gatehouse

Director Mark Giesser will return to London’s Upstairs at the Gatehouse next month with his new production of the classic Broadway musical comedy Call Me Madam.

Following on from hit versions of the dark Gershwin satire Strike Up the Band and the rarely-performed Broadway musical Once Upon a Mattress in 2019 and 2020, Giesser will bring the Tony Award-winning 1950s political satire to the Highgate Village venue from 9 September until 10 October 2021.

Giesser will take charge of a cast led by Olivier nominee Rosemary Ashe (The Phantom of the Opera, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Mary Poppins, Prince Edward Theatre) and Richard Gibson (Allo! Allo! TV and UK tour, Stepping Out, The Mill at Sonning).

They will be joined by Offie-nominee Beth Burrows (Once Upon a Mattress, Strike Up the Band), Daniel Breakwell (Big Girls Don’t Cry, UK tour), Kevin Walsh (Guys and Dolls, Prince of Wales Theatre), Zoë Ann Bown (Funny Girl, UK tour/Sky Arts), Andrew Wheaton (Me and My Girl, Adelphi Theatre), Chrissie Perkins (Evita, Phoenix Theatre) and Georgie Faith (The Little Mermaid, UK tour).

Call Me Madam at the Gatehouse is produced by Alces Productions.

Showcasing a score Irving Berlin, with a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, Call Me Madam debuted on Broadway in 1950 with the great Ethel Merman in the central role of the unconventional diplomat Sally Adams. The musical received its West End premiere in 1952 with Billie Worth in the leading role followed by a UK tour starring the production’s understudy Noele Gordon who would later return to the West End in the 1983 revival. The musical was previously seen at the Gatehouse in 2009 in a production directed by Thom Southerland and starring Beverley Klein.
