Thirty-four years after Michael Ball starred as Alex in the original West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love, the musical theatre favourite has unveiled Jamie Bogyo as his successor in the role ahead of the new West End production.
As previously announced, Ball will take on the role of George (originally played by Dinsdale Landen in 1989) in the new production which has been re-imagined for the 21st century. He will be joined by Bogyo who has snagged his second major musical role following his professional theatre debut in the hit West End production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
Announcing Bogyo’s casting in the role that is close to his heart, Ball said: “I’m thrilled to announce that the role of Alex in Aspects of Love will be played by Jamie Bogyo. He’s tall, good looking, sings like a dream and is half my age… I hate him! He will be amazing.”
The casting news was revealed on the Ken Bruce Show on BBC Radio 2 accompanied by a special performance of ‘Love Changes Everything’ featuring both Ball and Bogyo.
Reuniting Ball with his director on the 2012 West End revival of Sweeney Todd, Jonathan Kent, the new production will begin performances at the Lyric Theatre on 12 May 2023 with the initial booking period running through to 11 November 2023.
Based on the 1955 novella by David Garnett with music by Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black and Charles Hart, Aspects of Love premiered at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1989. The musical follows the romantic fortunes of actress Rose, her admirer Alex, his young cousin Jenny, his uncle George and George’s long-term mistress Giulietta.
The original production was directed by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by Gillian Lynne. Ball created the role of Alex on stage in the West End and also played the character in the Broadway transfer production.
The revised version of the musical will be produced by Nica Burns, by arrangement with The Really Useful Company Limited
