More gender-blind casting for the West End cast of Company

Richard Fleesham, George Blagden and Matthew Seadon-Young will take on key roles in Marianne Elliott’s eagerly anticipated gender-swapped version of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Company.

The trio will play the re-gendered and re-named by Sondheim roles of the three boyfriends of central character Bobbie (Rosalie Craig) in the production which will begin previewing at the Gielgud Theatre on 26 September 2018.

Currently starring in the touring version of Sting’s The Last Ship, Fleeshman (Ghost The Musical on Broadway and in the West End) will play Andy (originally April) alongside Blagden (Tartuffe, Theatre Royal Haymarket) as PJ (originally Marta) and Seadon-Young (Assassins, The Gate Theatre, Dublin) who will play Theo (formerly Kathy).

Also joining the previously announced Craig (The Light Princess), Broadway legend Patti LuPone and comedian Mel Giedroyc (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Playhouse Theatre) will be Gavin Spokes (Quiz, Chichester Festival Theatre), Richard Henders (Anything Goes, National Theatre), Jennifer Saayeng (Caroline Or Change, Chichester Festival Theatre), Ashley Campbell (The Rat Pack Live from Vegas, Theatre Royal Haymarket) and Ben Lewis (The Phantom of the Opera, Her Majesty’s Theatre).

Presented by Elliott & Harper productions, the latest ground-breaking production from the company’s award-winning artistic director Elliott is due to open on 17 October.

Elliott heads a creative team consisting of musical supervisor and conductor Joel Fram, choreographer Liam Steel, designer Bunny Christie, lighting designer Neil Austin, sound designer Ian Dickinson (for Autograph Sound), illusions designer Chris Fisher, orchestrator David Cullen, dance arranger Sam Davis and casting directors Alastair Coomer and Charlotte Sutton.

Debuting on Broadway in 1970, the multi award-winning show boasts the timeless music and lyrics of Sondheim and a book by Furth. Featuring classic Sondheim songs ‘Being Alive’ and ‘Marry Me A Little’, the original production was nominated for an incredible 14 Tony Awards, winning six including Best Musical.
