Glyn Kerslake leads the cast of Come Fly With Me at Salisbury Playhouse from 17 December
This Christmas audiences at Salisbury Playhouse are being invited to embark on a musical journey celebrating the wonderful world of holidays and travel. Come Fly With Me, running in The Salberg space from 17 December to 17 January 2015 (press night is 18 December), includes songs about getting away from the daily grind, the joy of holidays and how, often, it is quite nice to come home again.
Featuring a huge array of songs from artists including Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Wham and Queen, Come Fly With Me reflects songwriters’ fascination with travel and adventure. The show also includes songs from films, musical theatre, specially composed pieces and recent hits.
The talented cast of four singer/musicians comprises Natasha Brown, Elaine Glover, Matthew Harvey and musical supervisor Glyn Kerslake. The latter, who has starred as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and in Les Misérables, is returning to Salisbury Playhouse after the popular show, London Calling, last year.
Come Fly With Me was devised by Salisbury Playhouse’s artistic director Gareth Machin, and Adam Lenson, who directs the production. “This is a show about why we travel, what we get from a holiday and how, actually, it’s quite nice to come home again,” says Lenson. “But when we get home we’re a slightly different person to the one we were when we set off.”
Songs in Come Fly With Me include ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’, ‘Leaving On a Jet Plane’, ‘Mr Blue Sky’, and ‘The Long and Winding Road’. They are interspersed with poetry, dialogue and famous quotations as a group of hardworking city-slickers swap their daily drudgery for fun in the sun.
“I believe that holidays evoke a particular feeling in all of us – it’s a time of anticipation and excitement,” adds Lenson. “A good holiday stays with you long after you land. You go off in search of sunnier climes and come back with some of that sunshine in your step.”
