Musical La La Land breaks records at the Golden Globes

screen-shot-2017-01-09-at-19-09-56Feel good musical La La Land was the big winner at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday with a record-breaking haul of seven trophies.

The tuneful love note to Los Angeles that has been described as a ‘throwback to the Golden Age of the Hollywood musical’ won in every category for which it had been nominated at the glittering ceremony in LA.

Breaking the previous all-time record of six wins set by One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975 and matched by Midnight Express three years later, La La Land’s domination of the Globes is already being seen as a precursor to Oscar success next month.

Stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone took home the Golden Globes for Best Actor and Actress in a ‘motion picture – musical or comedy’ respectively, while Damien Chazelle claimed both the top film directing prize and the award for best screenplay.

Justin Hurwitz took home the Best Original Score for his work on the movie and also shared in the prize for Best Original Song with Benji Pasek and Justin Paul for ‘City of Stars’. La La Land’s record-breaking tally was completed with the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The brainchild of director Chazelle, whose previous hit was the triple Oscar winning Whiplash, La La Land takes its inspiration from the Hollywood musicals that entranced him as a child. The story of the romance between a struggling actress and a jazz pianist in modern day Los Angeles, the film has won rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. UK audiences get their chance to see the movie this week.
