Just over a month ago Kristin Lavransdatter [pictured] opened at Den Nationale Scene in Bergen. This new musical is based on the novel trilogy by Nobel Prize winner Sigrid Undset. It is considered one of Norway’s most epic and beloved stories, is set in the Middle Ages, and portrays Lavransdatter’s life through four decades.
The show has been composed by Julian Berntzen and dramatised by Svein Sturla Hungnes, who also directed (lyrics by Hungnes and Brit Bildøen). The cast featured Herborg Kråkevik and Hans Marius Hoff Mittet and the orchestra was led by MD Petter Kragstad.
Elsewhere Den Nationale Scene continued its pioneering work they started two years ago with the opening of the musical Hellemyrsfolket.
Oslo – kjaerlighetshistorie (Oslo – a love story) is an original story by composer Miguel-Angel Fernandez which he/she started writing five years ago and then brought lyricist Caroline Glomnes and book writer Marius Leknes Snekkevåg into the creative team.
After a closed reading and 11-day workshop, Oslo – en kjaerlighetshistorie saw its first audiences in February. This new musical tells the story of contemporary Oslo, where Stian, a married man in his mid-thirties, meets gay Chilean immigrant Oscar. It is a story about love for Oslo, love in Oslo and finding the courage to stay true to yourself.
The workshop has a cast of sixteen, with Kristian Larsen, Knut-Sigurd Bygland and Liv-Ellen Kahrs in the leading roles, and MD Sverre Tollefsen Laupstad at the grand piano. It is directed by Renate Stridh and produced by Lampelys Produksjoner.
