Funny Girl understudy turned star Natasha Barnes releases her debut single ‘Supermodel’ today (Friday 8 September).
The first release from her forthcoming album Real, ‘Supermodel’ will offer the first taste of Barnes’ recording deal with Sony Music which was announced earlier this year.
Signed under the name Natasha, the singer and actress’ debut album which will be released in early 2018 features original songs plus some selected classics inspired by her love of vintage records.
Commenting on her first single, Barnes said: “When I first heard ‘Supermodel’, I knew it was the song I wanted to sing. Young women today have an immense pressure on them to conform to an idealised version of beauty, and to fit into a mould which, I believe, is simply unattainable and unrealistic. We should only ever be ourselves and that should be celebrated. For me, this song speaks to that spirit and very much the woman in me.”
Hailed as a rising star from the moment she stepped into the role of Fanny Brice for the West End run of the hit show Funny Girl, Barnes joins a long and starry list of Sony Music signings from the musical theatre world. Her album will appear in a catalogue that includes the original Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews, Leonard Bernstein and Kristin Chenoweth.
After playing the title role in the Palladium’s all-star Cinderella at Christmas, Barnes returned to the role of Fanny Brice opposite recording artist turned stage star Darius Campbell’s Nicky Arnstein for selected dates on the recent Funny Girl national tour.
