Wise Children has announced new launch dates for the world premiere of artistic director Emma Rice’s eagerly-awaited adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
Co-produced by the National Theatre, Bristol Old Vic and York Theatre Royal and also directed by Rice, the re-imagining of the classic story will begin preview performances at Bristol Old Vic on 11 October 2021 ahead of an opening night on 20 October. The production will run until 6 November and will include live-streamed performances in the final week in Bristol.
Following the Bristol run, Wuthering Heights will transfer to York Theatre Royal from 8-20 November. The production will arrive at the National Theatre in early 2022 before playing tour dates at The Lowry, Theatre Royal Nottingham, Sunderland Empire and King’s Theatre, Edinburgh. Further venues will be announced at a later date.
Commenting on the production which will star Lucy McCormick as Cathy, multi-award-winning Rice said: “It is with an earthy spring in my step and epic twinkle in my eye that I announce our new plans for Wuthering Heights. So many projects have fallen by the wayside during lockdown that there were times when I lost hope – but there was no need!
“Wise Children are back; stronger, wiser and grateful for the chance to sing and dance again. The exceptional cast, crew, administrative and creative teams are ready to go and we are fizzing with ideas, dreams and anticipation. Emboldened and humbled by the enforced break, I feel truly lucky. I cannot wait to get back to doing what I love most and to share this thrilling and important piece with the world. It’s time.”
The production’s creative team includes set and costume designer Vicki Mortimer, with sound and video design by Simon Baker, composition by Ian Ross, movement and choreography by Etta Murfitt and lighting design by Jai Morjaria.
Rice is also due to direct her adaptation of Percy and Eleonore Adlon’s Bagdad Café which will begin preview performances at The Old Vic on 17 July and will run until 21 August. The production will be streamed live on the Old Vic: In Camera lockdown-launched streaming platform from 25-28 August 2021.
Created and led by Rice, Wise Children launched in April 2018 and is an Arts Council England National Portfolio organisation. Previous hit productions include Rice’s adaptation of Angela Carter’s Wise Children and Enid Blyton’s Malory Towers.
