Australian singer and performer Josh Piterman will step into the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 9 September 2019.
An established musical theatre performer and classical crossover artist in his home country, Piterman will make his West End debut in the much-loved show which will celebrate its 34th year in the capital in the autumn of 2020.
Part of the international pop opera group The Ten Tenors, Piterman has played leading roles in Australian productions of West Side Story, The Last Five Years, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical and Cats. His UK credits include playing Corny Collins in the UK tour of Hairspray.
Also joining the cast from 9 September, will be Netherlands-born Britt Lenting (Pasha Kovalev’s The Magic of Hollywood, UK tour) who will make her West End debut as Carlotta Giudicelli and We Will Rock You star Richard Woodford who will take over the role on Monsier André.
The newcomers will join current cast members: Kelly Mathieson as Christine Daaé, Ross Dawes as Monsieur Firmin, Kimberly Blake as Carlotta Giudicelli, Mark Oxtoby as Monsieur André, Jacinta Mulcahy as Madame Giry, Paul Ettore Tabone as Ubaldo Piangi, Georgia Ware as Meg Giry and Scott Davies as the standby Phantom. Danny Whitehead will now play Raoul with Bridget Costelloe as the alternate Christine Daaé.
The cast is completed by Zoe Arshamian, Matthew Barrow, James Butcher, Grace Castle, Sophie Caton, Sophie Cottrill, Corinne Cowling, Hadrian Delacey, Morven Douglas, Paul Erbs, Philip Griffiths, Katy Hanna, Ellen Jackson, Adam Robert Lewis, Kris Manuel, Tim Morgan, Danielle Pullum, Rebecca Ridout, Eleanor Sanderson-Nash, Anna Shircliff, Alistair So, John Stacey, Manon Taris, Andrei Teodor Iliescu, Ben Tyler, Claire Tilling, Victoria Ward and Simon Whitaker.
The Phantom of the Opera, opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 starring Michael Crawford as The Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine. The show is currently booking until April 2020.
The winner of over 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tonys and four Olivier Awards, The Phantom of the Opera is the first stage production to reach worldwide grosses of $6 billion the show has been seen by 140 million people in 41 countries and 183 cities in 17 languages.
The Phantom of the Opera can currently also be seen in New York, Prague and Sao Paulo and on tour in the US and Asia. A UK tour will open at Curve, Leicester on 24 February 2020.
