Nominations open for The Stage Awards 2022

Two new categories have been added to The Stage Awards 2022 to allow for the recognition of changes to the UK theatre industry due to the pandemic.

Work that appeared on digital platforms including live or recorded streams and podcasts will be eligible for the first Digital Project of the Year award while the Community Project of the Year award will celebrate the outstanding community work of performing arts organisations, with both in-person or remote/digital initiatives eligible.

Now open for nominations and focusing on work since December 2020, the awards will include a new prestigious Theatre of the Year category which combines the previous Regional and London Theatre categories.

Announcing the awards, the editor of The Stage, Alistair Smith said: “We have adapted our award categories to reflect the way British theatre is responding to a changing world. It has been a difficult time for British theatre, but also one during which we have seen some fantastic work – especially in the spheres of digital theatre and community programmes.

“Meanwhile, judges wanted to remove what had come to seem like an unnecessary distinction between work taking place in London and elsewhere in the UK to create a single Theatre of the Year category.”

Arts organisations and individuals are encouraged to self-nominate while subscribers to The Stage are invited to submit their own nominations for consideration by the judging panel. A series of industry experts will also be consulted and judges will be able to submit their own suggestions before the final decision is taken by The Stage Awards’ judging panel.

Submissions should be detailed entries containing supporting evidence and should arrive by the closing date of midnight on 26 November. The shortlist will be announced on 16 December with the winners announced at an invitation-only awards ceremony on 31 January. The 2022 ceremony will mark a return to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the ceremony’s home for nine years until 2020.
