A number of original cast members will re-join new British musical Cable Street when it marches back to London’s Southwark Playhouse this autumn with 42 performances at Southwark Playhouse Elephant.
Danny Colligan (Dirty Dancing, The Book of Mormon), Sha Dessi (Les Misérables) and recent graduate Joshua Ginsberg – the great grandson of Isidor Baum, one of the locals who made a stand during The Battle of Cable Street – will reprise their performances as the three young friends at the centre of the multi-cultural melting pot that is Cable Street.
They will be joined by fellow returnees Max Alexander-Taylor (The Lion, Southwark Playhouse), Aiofe Mac Namara (Cable Street, workshop) and Ethan Pascal Peters (Showstopper! The Improvised Musical). The new additions to the cast will be Davina Moon (Life Of Pi, Bombay Dreams, Miss Saigon) and Mia Overfield (Demon Dentist, UK tour, Jack & The Beanstalk, York) who will make her London debut in the production.
Inspired by the story of a multi-cultural community which came together to oppose Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists as they attempted to march through London’s East End in October 1936, the musical’s latest run (from 6 September to 10 October) will include a performance on 4 October coinciding with the anniversary of The Battle of Cable Street.
Announcing the return of the musical which debuted in front of sold-out houses earlier this year, the lead producer, 10 to 4 Productions’ Dylan Schlosberg said: “We had such a fantastic audience reception at our initial Southwark Borough run and now look forward to further develop and refine the show over the next few months, ready to go again at Southwark Playhouse Elephant in September.”
The tale of the ordinary people who united to defend their home and each other in the face of hatred, features a contemporary score by award-winning composer and lyricist Tim Gilvin (Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch). The first full-length musical from playwright Alex Kanefsky also marks the first time Kanefsky has worked with Gilvin.
Director Adam Lenson leads a production team that also includes choreographer Jevan Howard-Jones, musical director Tamara Saringer and associate director Jamie Howard-Jones, with orchestrations and arrangements by Tim Gilvin, vocal arrangements by Tim Gilvin and Tamara Saringer, set design by Yoav Segal, lighting design by Sam Waddington, sound by Charlie Smith, costume design by Lu Herbert, dramaturg by Olivia Mace, production management by The Production Office and casting by Sarah Leung
Cable Street is produced by Dylan Schlosberg and co-produced by Neil Marcus.
