Songwriters are being invited to submit an original song to be part of a digital song cycle created to offer a creative outlet for musical theatre practitioners during these difficult times.
Entitled On Hope, the project has been instigated by producer and director Matt Powell and writer, dramaturg and former executive director of Mercury Musical Developments, Victoria Saxton.
Calling on songwriters to respond to the theme, On Hope, Powell and Saxton said: “Out of the darkness we currently find ourselves in, we’re inviting songwriters to join us in writing songs around the theme of hope to be digitally performed in April.
“Our hope is that this digital song-cycle will provide a sense of community, joy and collaboration for artists. With so many theatres and shows shutting a lot of freelancers now face unemployment and uncertain futures. So, we’re asking songwriters to do what they do best, write.”
With a brief asking songwriters to produce work on the subject of ‘hope’, writers are being asked to submit their work by 5 April 2020 to allow organisers to go through ideas, ensure no overlap and work out a structure for the song cycle.
Songwriters can submit their work in whatever format they choose and should let the organisers know if they have access to equipment within their own homes and if they would be open to performing their work.
Powell and Saxton are working with a large number of genre practitioners on the currently unfunded project but have issued an open invitation to performers or people with technical expertise to get involved.
