Open auditions are to be held in London next week for dancers and singers to appear in Dusty, the new musical about the turbulent life of one of British pop’s most distinctive singers, Dusty Springfield.
Dancers and singers “who excel in commercial dance” are being invited to attend the auditions on Friday 19 January at Toynbee Studios, 28 Commercial Street, London E1 6AB.
Hopefuls should arrive for registration between 10am and 1pm, with auditions running from 10.30am until 6pm. Men must be at least 5’ 10” tall with women at least 5’ 8”.
All auditionees are asked to bring a current CV and headshot; suitable dance clothing (which should not disguise body shape); water; and be prepared to perform a pop song chosen to “show off their voice” (only some auditionees will be asked to sing). Women are asked to bring heels and all auditionees should be prepared to remain at the studios until 6pm.
Recalls will be in the week commencing 22 January and candidates must be available from 21 May until 28 July 2018 and eligible to work in the UK.
Produced by Eleanor Lloyd Productions, the show will rehearse in London ahead of its world premiere at Bath Theatre Royal in June and tour dates in Sheffield, Newcastle and Manchester.
Directed by West End leading lady Maria Friedman, the musical which is based on the authorised biography of the singer has been written by playwright, novelist and screenwriter Jonathan Harvey (Beautiful Thing, Gimme Gimme Gimme). Tim Jackson will choreograph and the production will be designed by Tom Pye.
Taking inspiration from the authorised biography Dancing With Demons, written by music journalist Penny Valentine and Springfield’s friend and manager Vicki Wickham, Harvey’s work will also be based on interviews with those who knew the iconic star the best including her friend and secretary Pat Rhodes and record executive Tris Penna.
Multi award-winning actress Friedman made her debut as a director in 2012 with Merrily We Roll Along and then went on to stage High Society at the Old Vic in 2015. Last year she won acclaim for directing the popular revival of Richard Harris’ Stepping Out.
