Major cast changes will take place in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End from 2 September this year. Fresh from his success as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables at the Queen’s Theatre, Geronimo Rauch will join the cast as the Phantom. At the same time, Broadway leading man Sean Palmer will join as Raoul. Andy Hockley will play Monsieur Firmin, with Martin Ball as Monsieur Andre, Claire Moore as Carlotta, Jacinta Mulcahy as Madame Giry, Cat Lane as Meg Giry, and Olivia Brereton and Harriet Jones will both play Christine at certain performances. The musical will continue to star Sofia Escobar as Christine and Jeremy Secomb as Piangi.
In addition to playing Jean Valjean in the West End production of Les Miserables, Argentinian singer and actor Rauch has also taken on the roles of Feuilly and Marius in the show in Argentina, as well as taking part in the 25th anniversary celebration at the O2.
Palmer was most recently seen as Bobby in the Olivier Award-winning production of Crazy for You at the Open Air Theatre Regent’s Park, and its subsequent West End transfer to the Novello Theatre. His Broadway credits include creating the role of Prince Eric in Disney’s The Little Mermaid and the original cast of Fosse. Film and television roles include Stanford Blatch’s boyfriend Marcus in Sex and the City.
The Phantom of the Opera became the longest running show in Broadway history on 9 January 2006 when it celebrated its 7,486th performance, surpassing the previous record holder Cats. This coincided with the Broadway and the US national touring company celebrating an unprecedented 20,000 performances in the United States. In January 2013 the Broadway production celebrated 25 years on Broadway. In October 2011 the London production celebrated its 25th anniversary with a staging at the Royal Albert Hall which was screened live in cinemas all over the world and subsequently released on DVD. In March 2013 the show celebrated 11,000 performances in the West End. The musical is currently showing in London, New York, Budapest, Tokyo and Singapore. A new US tour will open in November.
