Star rating: three stars ★ ★ ★ ✩ ✩
This production of Saturday Night Fever brought funky dance moves and singalongs to Aylesbury – even on a weekday!
The story, of course, follows the lead character Tony Manero (played by Richard Winsor), a keen and talented dancer who is fighting to break free from his normal life. His slick and sleek dance moves really come into play as he enters his favourite nightclub 2001 and hits the dance floor. Winsor does the image of John Travolta proud, although he is not quite as cool and easy going!
Tony and his friends attend 2001 for three things; the ladies, dancing and a really good time. Unfortunately, Tony’s womaniser streak breaks the heart of a young sweetheart Annette (played by Anna Campkin) who just wants to be loved.
The musical which encompasses the songs of the Bee Gees has the audience groovin’ in their seats. Campkin’s rendition of ‘If I Can’t Have You’ offers a sweetness to proceedings and she makes her character extremely likeable. The heartbreak strikes as Tony meets another woman, Stephanie (played by Kate Parr) who also shares his passion (and talent) for dancing. The nightclub 2001 holds a dancing competition and it is no surprise that both Tony and Stephanie have their eyes on each other for winning the prize. Both Parr and Winsor perform their routines with ease.
Another extremely personable character is Bobbie C played by Raphael Pace which makes his storyline so tragic and heartbreaking.
The cast of the show oozes with energy and clearly has impeccable dance moves. With the greatest hits of the Bee Gees and one of the biggest disco balls I’ve ever seen, it’s hard to stay still in your seat.
