EastEnder Shane Richie is swapping Walford for the West End to take on a leading role in the critically-acclaimed Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
The comedian turned actor who previously starred in the West End in Grease will join the cast of the hit show to play in the role of Hugo/Loco Chanelle from 28 January until 4 May 2019.
Announcing the newest cast member, the production’s producer Nica Burns said: “We are all delighted that Shane is joining the cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, he’s an incredibly talented performer. I know he’ll pull out all the stops and make Hugo/Loco Chanelle entirely his own. It’s going to be a lot of fun!”
Celebrating joining the show Richie commented: “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a terrific show so I jumped at the chance to play Hugo/Loco Chanelle. It’s so different from any role I’ve played before and too good an opportunity to miss.
“I started my career in nightclubs and cabaret pubs – the kind of world Hugo inhabits – where I met some wonderful characters. So, in a sense, I feel like I’ve met Hugo/Loco Chanelle before. I’ve had lots of ideas about how to portray the character and sing the songs. As for my dress and heels, hang onto your handbags!”
Richie will be stepping into his high heels from 28 January 2019 alongside Layton Williams who will take over the role of Jamie New. Further casting is to be announced.
Originally planned as a limited season at the Apollo Theatre following on from a successful debut run at Sheffield Crucible, Everybody’s Talking about Jamie’s West End run is currently booking until 28 September 2019.
Written by Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae, the show is directed by Jonathan Butterell, who also came up with the original idea for the show. The critically-acclaimed show has collected seven major theatre awards to date and filming is due to begin on a movie version of the musical in the spring.
The production’s creative team includes designer Anna Fleischle, choreographer Kate Prince, musical director Theo Jamieson, lighting designer Lucy Carter, sound designer Paul Groothuis and casting director Will Burton.
