Sheridan Smith to bring her Cilla from screen to stage

Sheridan Smith will recreate her award-winning TV portrayal of Cilla Black on stage when she stars in Bill Kenwright’s acclaimed Cilla The Musical this autumn.

Recently seen on stage as The Narrator in the London Palladium revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the Funny Girl star will revisit her performance as Liverpool’s favourite daughter in BAFTA Award-winning writer Jeff Pope’s musical adaptation of his hit ITV series for a four-week residency at the Liverpool Empire from 23 September 2020.

Following the Liverpool run the tour will visit Aylesbury’s Waterside Theatre, Edinburgh Playhouse Theatre, Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre and Leeds Grand Theatre.

Presented by Kenwright and Laurie Mansfield with Cilla’s son Robert Willis serving as executive producer, the extraordinary story of Liverpool teenager Priscilla White’s journey to stardom received its world premiere in the star’s hometown at the Liverpool Empire in September 2017.

Kenwright also directs the production alongside Bob Tomson with design by Gary McCann, lighting design by Nick Richings, sound design by Dan Samson and musical direction by Scott Adler.

The show’s first tour in 2017/2018 featured unknown Kara Lily Hayworth who was chosen from thousands of would-be Cillas who flocked to open auditions at venues across the country. Hayworth starred opposite former Coronation Street and The Bill star Andrew Lancel as legendary music manager Brian Epstein.
