Siddhartha the Musical continues at the Assembly Rooms until 24 August.
Epic, stunning and remarkably exhilarating. Siddhartha the Musical brings a whole new level to how far a musical can go in bringing scale in performance to what is essentially Buddhist teachings. It ranges from the epic to the specific with ease as we follow Siddhartha in a retrospective of his life from spoilt Prince to enlightened teacher.
This show is teeming with perfect stagecraft: direction, performance, lighting, costume are all of the very highest standard. Both the older and the younger Siddhartha are perfectly judged by Giorgio Adamo as the former and Michael Nouri as the latter. They are handsome, charismatic and dripping with vocal talent and presence.
The piece is virtually sung through in Italian, with ‘supertitles’ on screens around the stage. In a way, this elevates the work to ‘almost’ Edinburgh International Festival standard – it’s a meeting between high art and Bollywood that leaves the audience breathless. The staging is extraordinary: blending projection, lasers and amazing lighting technique to render this polished work into a glittering gem. Grab it while you can!
