Southwark Playhouse has launched a new free online streaming service offering shows and exclusive video content.
Aimed at keeping lockdown audiences entertained until the popular South London venue can re-open its doors #SouthwarkStayhouse is now streaming the venue’s world premiere production of the rock musical Wasted, last year’s production of Twelfth Night and 2011’s Bound.
Directed by Adam Lenson and featuring a score by Olivier Award-winning Christopher Ash (Showstoppers) and a book and lyrics by Carl Miller (Emil and the Detectives), Wasted re-imagines the lives of the Brontë siblings in a modern setting.
Funny Girl’s Natasha Barnes plays Charlotte Brontë alongside Siobhan Athwal (Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare Globe) and Molly Lynch (Sunset Boulevard, UK tour) as her sisters Emily and Anne and Matthew Jacobs Morgan (Our Town, Almeida) as their brother Branwell.
Presented in the style of a rock documentary, Wasted played The Large in September and October 2018.
Director Anna Girvan’s version of Twelfth Night ran in The Little in January 2019 as part of Southwark Playhouse’s annual Shakespeare for Schools initiative. Designed by Anna Reid, the production features Becky Barry, Aruhan Galieva, Sapphire Joy, Caroline Parker, Liv Spencer and Luke Wilson.
Written and directed by Jesse Briton, Bound played the venue’s old Vault space under London Bridge in 2011. The story of six trawlermen from Devon as they embark on one final voyage, the production starred Thomas Bennett, James Crocker, Joe Darke, Alan Devally, Daniel Foxsmith and John McKeever.
Alongside the three full-length shows now available to view, the venue will release more content fortnightly.
