Joanne Clifton will star in the London Fringe production of Top Hat
Strictly Come Dancing reigning champion Joanne Clifton will star in the London Fringe premiere of the stage version of the classic 1935 film Top Hat at North London’s Upstairs at the Gatehouse in December.
Clifton, who starred in the touring production of Thoroughly Modern Millie this year, will follow in the footsteps of Hollywood Golden Age legend Ginger Rogers by taking on the role of socialite Dale Travers in the production which will run from 13 December until 28 January 2018 with a press night on 15 December.
Produced by Ovation, the production will be directed by John Plews with choreography by Chris Whittaker, musical supervision by Dan Glover, orchestrations and arrangements by Chris Walker, and casting by Debbie O’Brien and Harry Blumenau. The production will be produced by Katie Plews.
Featuring the timeless music of Irving Berlin and based on the screenplay by Dwight Taylor and Allan Scott, the musical version of the much-loved RKO musical comedy features a book by Matthew White and Howard Jacques. The show which debuted in the West End in 2012 won the 2013 Olivier Awards for Best New Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Choreographer.
The most successful film to feature the partnership of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Top Hat tells the story of Broadway sensation Jerry Travers and his efforts to win the heart of society girl Dale Tremont.
