Exclusive – The S&S Award for new writing – exciting changes ahead

S and S Awards 2013 logo (1)Following four years with Mercury Musical Developments, the prestigious S&S Award (celebrating new musical theatre) is branching out. After various proposals from independent producers, the prize is incorporating several changes from 2016 onwards.

The S&S Award will:

– be produced independently and entrants will not need to be members of any particular organisation. Watch out for a press announcement about this in the coming months.

– become a bi-annual instead of an annual event.

– be fully international, receiving entries from around the world.

The S&S Award is designed to help a new writing team in the most practical way possible, by giving the winners the unique opportunity to work with a professional team to further develop their musical over the coming year. The prize is the brainchild of renowned stage book writer and lyricist Warner Brown who created the special award in memory of his parents, the hoteliers Sidney and Sylvia (S&S) Brown, both lovers of musical theatre. The award celebrates and honours new unproduced musicals and is judged by a panel of industry luminaries.

Last year’s S&S Award attracted a record number of entries from around the world. The overall winner of the competition was Here by Kate Marlais and Alex Young.

In January this year the 2014 S&S Award-winning, one-man musical Stay Awake, Jake by Tim Gilvin was featured in the Vault Festival at the distinctive subterranean arts venue in London’s Waterloo. The piece won the Vault Festival’s Origins Award for Outstanding New Work.

Musical Theatre Review’s critic wrote of the production: “Composer/lyricist Tim Gilvin has developed and honed his one-act, one-man musical into a captivating journey that, with the help of a top-class performer [Jamie Muscato], keeps you on the edge of your seat.”

The prize has also formed a partnership with hothouse of new musicals, Leicester Curve, under the artistic directorship of Nikolai Foster.
