Multi-award-winning director Thom Southerland will direct the world premiere of She Loves You, a new musical based on the Lennon and McCartney songbook.
The director of hit productions including Titanic The Musical and Grand Hotel is also co-writing the book for the musical which will debut in March 2022 at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Written by Southerland and playwright and screenwriter Shaun McKenna with adaptations by Danish writer Jokum Rohde, She Loves You focuses on the lives and loves of one family accompanied by some of the world’s most enduringly popular songs.
Backed by Sony Music Publishing, Scandinavia, She Loves You will feature over 40 of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s best-loved songs from The Beatles’ years (1963-1970) including ‘Let It Be’, ‘The Long and Winding Road’, ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ and the title song ‘She Loves You’.
Presented by Danish producer Mikkel Rønnow and Nordic Musical Partners, the launch production will feature a cast of 24 led by Danish singer and actress Maria Lucia. The production which will feature Danish dialogue and English-language songs will transfer to Musikhuset in Aarhus before embarking on a Scandinavian tour, taking in dates in Sweden, Norway and Iceland. There are also plans for other productions in other parts of the world.
Lennon & McCartney’s classic hits will be underscored and orchestrated for a 16-piece orchestra by Grammy Award winner Steve Sidwell, the orchestrator of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical with musical supervision by Mikkel Ronnow. The high-profile creative team also includes award-winning set designer Morgan Large, choreographer Nick Winston, lighting designer Tim Mitchell and sound designer Tim Høyer.
