Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ hit British musical Six The Musical continues to make waves on the other side of the Atlantic with three wins at the 71st annual Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Currently playing to packed houses at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre in New York, the musical which was puts the spotlight on the wives of Henry VIII took home The Majorie Gunner Award for Outstanding New Broadway Musical, while creators Marlow and Moss won the Outstanding Score award and Gabriella Slade collected the award for Outstanding Costume Design (Play or Musical).
While Six collected a trio of awards, the genre winner was the Broadway-bound Kimberly Akimbo with four awards. Due to begin previews on Broadway in October, the Atlantic Theater Company production was judged to be the Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical. Star Victoria Clark won the Outstanding Actress in a Musical Award, director Jessica Stone collected the Outstanding Director of a Musical Award, and the writer of the original play, David Lindsay-Abaire won the Outstanding Book of a Musical Award.
Chosen by writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, another musical theatre multiple winner was Company which took home three awards: Outstanding Revival of a Musical (Broadway or Off-Broadway) Award; the Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical Award for Matt Doyle; and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical Award for Patti LuPone.
The Outstanding Actor in a Musical went to Jaquel Spivey – the star of the most Tony-nominated show of the year, A Strange Loop; jukebox musical MJ the Musical’s Christopher Wheeldon and Rich + Tone Talauega won the Outstanding Choreography Award; and Jason Howland took home the Outstanding Orchestrations Award for Christina Anderson, Craig Lucas and Larry Kirwan’s Paradise Square.
