The upcoming world premiere of a new musical based on David Nicholls’ best-selling book One Day has been extended for an extra two weeks in response to exceptional public demand.
Presented by Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre and Melting Pot, the production which will make its debut in Edinburgh – the city where the love story begins – will now run from 26 February until 19 April.
As previously announced, Olivier Award-nominee Jamie Muscato (The Great Gatsby, London Coliseum, Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, Donmar Warehouse) will play Dexter opposite Sharon Rose (Hamilton, Victoria Palace Theatre, Caroline, or Change, Hampstead Theatre) as Emma.
They will be joined by Olivier Award nominee Josefina Gabrielle (Chicago, Garrick Theatre/Cambridge Theatre/Adelphi Theatre, Les Misérables, Sondheim Theatre) as Alison Mayhew, Miracle Chance (The Witches, National Theatre, Heathers, The Other Palace) as Tilly, Kelly Hampson (Stiletto, Charing Cross Theatre, School of Rock, Gillian Lynne Theatre) as Sylvie, David Birrell (A Christmas Carol, Bolton Octagon, South Pacific, Chichester Festival Theatre/UK tour) as Stephen, Matthew McKenna (The Phantom of the Opera, His Majesty’s Theatre, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, European tour) as Mr Godalming, Dan Buckley (Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical, UK tour, Eugenius!, The Other Palace) as Ian and Peter Hannah (Wild Rose: The Musical, Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh, Waitress, Adelphi Theatre) as Callum/Ensemble.
The cast is completed by Tanisha Butterfield (Sister Act The Musical, Palace Theatre Manchester/London Eventim Apollo/UK tour, Mamma Mia!, UK and international tour), Ewan Murphy (Grease, Kilworth House Theatre, The Last Twenty-Five Years, Royal Academy of Music) and Kirsty Anne Shaw (9 to 5 The Musical, UK tour, Evita, London Palladium).
The latest incarnation of Nicholls’ much-loved work has been adapted for the stage by the Lyceum’s former artistic director David Greig with music and lyrics by Abner and Amanda Ramirez (from acclaimed American folk/rock band Johnnyswim) and additional material by Freya Catrin Smith.
Directed by Tony and Olivier Award nominee Max Webster, One Day: The Musical will have choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, set and costume design by Rae Smith, lighting design by Bruno Poet, sound design by Simon Baker, music supervision and arrangements by Nigel Lilley, orchestrations by Simon Hale, casting by Stuart Burt and orchestra management by Andy Barnwell and Rich Weeden for BW Musicians Ltd.
One Day will be part of the Royal Lyceum’s 60th anniversary season, which will be the first season programmed by incoming artistic director James Brining.
Announcing the production earlier this year, Brining said: “We’re delighted to welcome the deeply loved, captivating story of David Nicholls’ One Day to the Lyceum stage. It feels right that the story will start its theatrical life at home in Edinburgh where the book begins. The story of Dexter and Emma is entwined in this city, and I’m excited to see the show take shape in the very capable hands of David Greig with heartfelt music and lyrics from Abner and Amanda Ramirez and direction from multi-award-winning director Max Webster.
“I am proud to host the world premiere of this beloved story turned musical as part of my first season as artistic director, and for it to be a part of the Royal Lyceum’s 60th anniversary season.”
Simon Friend, of theatre and film production company Melting Pot, added: “When I started reading David Nicholls’ era-defining novel One Day on the tube in 2009, the people next to me and opposite were doing the same, so quickly did this universally relatable story become essential reading, piercing hearts across the world. After more than a decade of trying to produce a stage adaptation of it, I can’t imagine working with a more accomplished team of artists to make this show, and it’s a true privilege to open it in the city where Dex and Em’s story famously begins.”
